Ponta Delgada

ENTA – Escola de Novas Tecnologias dos Açores is a vocational and technological school and was born in 1993-10-06. We are dedicated to the development and implementation of vocational training policies. Our main goal is to promote and improve initial vocational training and education for young students.

Along the years, we have been sharing our expertise with other schools and collaborators, and have received students from all the nine islands of the archipelago of the Azores. Our main vocational training courses areas are about: food industry, computer engineering and programming, automation, quality management and electricity. These are mainly long-term courses (3 years). At the end, the students get a double certification: a vocational degree and an educational degree. This helps young people to move from education into the labor market.

We also do some short period courses, mainly for those who are already working in the market or to help unemployed or underemployed adults return to learning and refocus their careers. We also do b-learning courses for teachers and trainers (pedagogical topics). In the near future, we will use this same approach to the development of training offers in other areas.

Our school is certified in quality (ISO 9001:2015) and we give our students some international certifications: we are a CISCO Academy, a MICROSOFT Imagine Academy and a KNX Academy.

Our long term courses are from Level IV and V of the european qualifications framework for lifelong leaning (https://ec.europa.eu/ploteus/sites/eac-eqf/files/leaflet_en.pdf).

Escola Profissional da Ribeira Grande

Rabo de Peixe

The Professional School of Ribeira Grande, hereinafter referred to as EPRG, has 21 years, having started its activity on February 5, 1998, in the Village of Rabo de Peixe (RP) and constitutes a valance of The Ponte Norte-Cooperative of Teaching and Development of Ribeira Grande, created with the aim of promoting culture and professional education in the municipality.

Throughout its 21 years, its main activity was the qualification of young people who opt for this type of teaching, having been taught various courses of different typologies (professional technician, reactivating and qualification courses) and different areas, such as fishing, sailor, civil construction, tourism, graphic arts, agriculture, carpentry, fashion design, computer science, among others. Nevertheless, alongside the teaching there was always the concern of local and regional development, through professional qualification, promoter of the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation. In fact, EPRG has as its mission the professional and professionalizing qualification of human resources and the promotion of culture for the development of the Community. In this way, the cooperation between the Community and the various entities, both at local and regional level, is fundamental. An example of this is the partnerships that are established with a variety of welcoming internship entities and other partnerships that are consolidating in order to promote the practical component and, consequently, a qualification as best as possible. In this sense, the school intends to broaden its field of action and, by inefficiency, its trainees, arousing them the European sense, making them feel European citizens, in a first instance, and, on a second, providing them with a training/ Stage outside its comfort area, which will ensure a solid preparation for the job market. In addition, bringing Europe closer to school is an asset to the fact that it allows its internationalization.

  • Ao longo dos três anos de formação desenvolvem-se mecanismos de aproximação entre as escolas e diferentes instituições económicas, profissionais, associativas, sociais e culturais;
  • Faculta-se aos formandos, contactos com o mundo do trabalho e experiência profissional (mais valia na preparação para uma adequada inserção sócio profissional);

ABOUT AZORES AND PONTA DELGADA

The Azores Islands are a Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, located about 1,500 km (930 mi) from Lisbon and about 3,900 km (2,400 mi) from the east coast of North America. The Monchique islet on Flores Island, located at 31° 16ʹ 24ʺ W is regarded as the westernmost point in Europe, even though from a geological standpoint the two westernmost Azorean islands (Flores and Corvo) actually lie on the North American plate.

The Azores archipelago is located in a region between 37° N and the parallels of latitude that pass through the Lisbon area (39° 43ʹ / 39° 55ʹ N), giving it generally a tepid, oceanic, subtropical climate, with mild annual temperatures oscillating from 15°C (59 °F) to 27°C (80°F). The average temperature in Azores is 18°C (64°F).

The ocean water temperature in Azores range from 17°C (63°F) in the winter to 25°C (77° F) in the summer.

Ponta Delgada is the largest municipality and administrative capital of the Autonomous Region of the Azores in Portugal. It is located on São Miguel Island, the largest and most populous in the archipelago.

The population in 2011 was 68,809.

The famous 18th century portals open up to a number of monuments that are worth visiting, most of them built between the 16th and the 18th century. Other places to visit: Caldeira das Sete Cidades (green and blue lakes), Lagoa do Fogo, Ribeira Grande, Vale das Furnas (spas and hot mineral pools), and Vila Franca do Campo.

The Islet of Vila Franca do Campo is a nature reserve located approximately one km away from the coast, it features a salt water inlet inside, where is organized a competition of the RedBull Cliff Diving.

SIGHTSEEING

Volcanoes and the Azores go hand-in hand: Nearly every volcano to be found on Portuguese soil is set on these islands. There are spectacular clues to their power at a peninsula on Faial island that was formed in the 1950s, the Capelinhos volcano that was a submarine eruption intensely observed, documented and studied from its beginning to end.

The main geothermal activity is located around the town of Furnas on São Miguel where local chefs use the heat to cook food.

Other Islands and other places worth visiting

In all the islands of Azores there are places that deserve to be known. When booking flights it may be possible to secure passage through another island before or after the Conference, with or without additional cost. Inter-island flights are provided by the regional company, SATA.

Terceira Island – The historic center of its capital, Angra do Heroismo, has been classified in UNESCO’s International Heritage list.

Marina da Horta – On Faial Island is the Azores’s main recreational harbour. The walls and ground of the quays, docks and breakwaters are plastered with painting made by almost every captain to pass through, telling you the name of the vessel and date of the voyage.

Montanha do Pico – Stretching out from the dormant volcano, with an altitude of 2351m, the highest mountain in Portugal, which gives it its name, the island of Pico has an oblong shape, a length of 42 km, a width of 15.2 km and a total area of 447 km2.
