Cultural Excursion and lunch

IALYSOS was one of the three famous ancient cities on Rhodes. In the surrounding area remains of occupation have been found back to the end of the 3rd millennium BC and there are also settlements and cemeteries dating from the Minoan-Mycenaen period. Later, during historical times, the authority of the city extended over the entire north part of the island. The precise location of Ialysos itself in Archaic and Classical times is unknow, however, the “city” probably consisted of rural settlements sharing a common organisation and a common acropolis on the hill of Philerimos.

The building remains of ancient Ialysos discovered to date are mainly on the Philerimos hill, which was given this name in Byzantine times. Its earliest known name was Achaia, which is further evidence for the presence of Greeks in this area during the Mycenaean period. Strabo calls the hill Ochyroma. From very early times the hill was, in fact, used as a strong point and as a place of worship.

About Rhodes

Also known as the “Knights’ Island”, Rhodes Island has a population of about 98.000 inhabitants. It is the most touristic island among the Dodecanese islands, welcoming a great amount of package tour or individual tourists attracted by the high level of rich history, sunshine, sandy beaches, unspoiled villages, mountains, forests, and impressive medieval architecture of the island.

The biggest asset of Rhodes is its capital (the City of Rhodes). It is a medieval city, the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe, and its fortifications are considered as the finest example of medieval architecture. The Old Town of Rhodes with its stone-paved alleys and elegant mansions is a listed World Heritage Site.

Eat and drink

There are only a handful of restaurants in the near vicinity of the Sheraton Rhodes Resort.

The city center and its surrounding area, on the other hand, is full of restaurants and cafes. There are several top-quality restaurants to choose from as well as cozy meeting places. You can enjoy the abundance of foods and drinks made from locally produced ingredients.

Did you know that Rhodes is equally famous for its locally produced wine, cheese, olive oil, vegetable and freshly-made pasta? The main feature of the traditional diet in Rhodes is the variety of foods, the predominant food types being legumes, cereal, wild greens, olive oil, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables.
